Dick Tracy statue to stand guard over Naperville Riverwalk
Comic-strip star to be honored in Naperville statue By Bob Goldsborough
In just a few months, a larger-than-life sculpted likeness of legendary police detective Dick Tracy -- who for more than 77 years has graced the funny pages and made appearances on TV, in cartoons and on the silver screen -- will rise above the Riverwalk in downtown Naperville. Nearly 9 feet tall, the 35th piece of artwork erected in Naperville by the non-profit Century Walk Corp., will depict the square-jawed sleuth in a familiar pose: using his two-way wrist radio to talk to a colleague. The sculpture will be dedicated Oct. 4, the 78th anniversaryof the comic strip's debut. Placement of the $130,500 sculpture makes a lot of sense, Century Walk leaders said, because Dick Locher, who drew the strip for a quarter-century, has lived in Naperville for 40 years.
