| Justin: Lewis and Alexander are great calls. The Chronicles of Prydain were extremely formative for me, too. So, why come "back" to fantasy after three more mainstream novels? Durham: Fantasy is the genre that taught me to love reading. I've never forgotten that, and I wanted to acknowledge it by writing in the genre myself. It partially felt like a way of paying respect to where I came from. It’s not entirely conscious decision making, though. I got the idea for the series because it crept up on me and started whispering in my ear. I wanted another big story after Pride of Carthage, but the story that was whispering to me just didn’t really fit on the map of this world. I needed a new map, and a new world. |
