It was when I saw a picture of a steampunk laptop — a jolly contraption tricked out in bits of antique leather and brass studs, the sort of device Captain Nemo might have had on the Nautilus — that I decided I just had to find out: what exactly is steampunk? Isn't it a genre of literature? Well, yes; but it has mutated into many things beside. Steampunk these days is philosophy, art, fashion, design, film, comics, music, a way of life and a marketing tool. Think retro: airships, flight goggles, corsets or brass pistons. Essentially, though, it's a kind of fiction. But it's hard to find a precise definition. |
