"The narrator and protagonist of Privilege of the Sword is Katherine, a 15-year-old girl who is the niece of Alec from Swordspoint, Kushner said. "She's just a normal girl who comes from an aristocratic background, but her family doesn't have any money," she said. "As one reviewer pointed out, everyone in her family is completely psychotic. As you read the book, you realize even the people she thinks are normal are completely crazy, and she is the only one who is not ... a drama queen. [Katherine] is very practical, very sensible, and kind of ends up having to take care of all of the adults around her. So you get the sense that she's going to live a really annoying life of being of service to others. Then, when this dramatic thing happens to her in the book, she realizes she has to take power on her own for herself and for her friends. She changes a lot: She still remains responsible, but she becomes a very active person who is no longer just working to make sure her mother doesn't get freaked out." "
