Des nouvelles de Gene Wolfe

Gene Wolfe a publié il y a quelques mois son nouveau roman : Soldier of Sidon. Il est d'ailleurs parmi les finalistes du World Fantasy Award. Un roman qui raconte le voyage de son héros en Egypte.

Voici ce qu'il en dit :

"He travels up the Nile on the Phoenician ship that brought him there, through Nubia and into Central Africa, finding a girl and losing his sword," Wolfe said in an interview.

Latro is an early Roman: practical, tough and courageous, once the centurion of a company of mercenaries, Wolfe said. "He suffered a head wound while serving in the second Persian army that invaded Greece, and this wound causes him to lose his short-term memories after 12 hours or so," he said. "In lieu of memory, he carries a papyrus scroll on which he notes the events and conversations he knows he will soon forget."

Son prochain roman est prévu en novembre et s'intitulera : Pirate Freedom

C'est marrant, mais résumé comme ça, c'est exactement la trame de Aux Confins de l'Oecumène d'Ivan Efremov, publié dans les années 60 aux Editions en Langues étrangères (Moscou).
Le héros est un grec emmené sur un bateau phénicien en Egypte, où il devient esclave. Il remonte le Nil puis est libéré avec ses compagnons pour avoir participé à une chasse au rhinocéros. On leur ordonnne seulement de ne pas revenir en Egypte et ils s'enfoncent donc dans l'Afrique noire.
Wolfe serait-il lecteur de Efremov?
