Franzen's Message to Fans: That Is a Rough Draft
Published: October 2, 2010
OOPS. Jonathan Franzen's new novel, "Freedom," has been hailed by
critics as "brilliant" and "a masterpiece." But the version released
in Britain last week is not quite all that, British newspapers report.
Mr. Franzen told an audience at a reading in London that a draft
version of his book had been published by mistake. How could this
happen? The wrong computer file had been opened and copied, he said,
rather than the one containing the final proof. He asked fans not to
read the novel until the correct version is published this week.
