The World of Ice & Fire will be published in late 2014. It features all new content concerning Westeros and beyond, certain aspects of the series history brought to life and/or expanded upon for the first time. George was required to contribute 50,000 new words; he ended up writing 250,000 words instead.

People can say what they want of George, but the man produces words at an incredible rate. It is my understanding that some of those 250,000 words will be used in The World of Ice & Fire, the remaining content likely pushed forward to a later date and publication once the series is complete.
