"Ringworld" (1970), along with its various sequels and prequels, takes place in the same time frame but largely outside the Known Space realm.

He has produced many novels and stories since that time, adding to his store of awards, but confesses to a soft spot for the earlier work.

"I have a certain special fondness for the collection 'Neutron Star' and the various stories associated with it," Niven says. "I spoke at two universities in Israel recently, and the guy who was instrumental in bringing me handed me a copy of that book. He told me it carried him through the Yom Kippur War and he wanted me to have that copy of it, which meant a lot. "
